Water Towers

Water towers are everywhere in Saudi Arabia, yet they are almost never looked at. They stand above neighbourhoods, above mosques, above everything — and yet they have become invisible through familiarity. This project turns the camera toward them seriously. Each image considers the tower not as utility but as form: its volume against the sky, its relationship to the buildings below it, the way shadow falls across its surface at different hours. Some towers are elegant without trying to be. Others are strange, even comic. All of them have a presence that rewards attention. The work is also a kind of civic inventory. In documenting water towers across different regions, the project charts something about place — the particular light of the Eastern Province, the compressed density of Riyadh's older districts, the open horizontality of towns in the north. The towers become a consistent formal element through which to read difference.
